Please join us via Zoom (see below) on Wednesday, September 14 at noon for
a colloquy led by Dr. Henry Milner:
Right-wing populism and the lessons of Sweden's election.
Since the Great Recession, right-wing populist parties have been gaining
support in many European countries. Prior to Sunday's election, Swedish
polls indicated that the Sweden Democrats, a nationalist anti-immigration
party, was likely to be the second largest party in the Riksdag after the
election (the polls indicated voters were evenly divided between the
centre-left and centre-right alliances, with the SD part of the
center-right alliance). Dr. HenryMilner will discuss the results of the
election and their wider implications.
Three chapters of his recently published political memoir:
*Participant/Observer:
An Unconventional Life in Politics and Academia** are based on his
experiences in Sweden where he was a visiting professor over a 20-year
period, and its Nordic neighbours.
Dr. Milner is currently the Research Chair in Electoral Studies for the
Department of Political Science at l’Université de Montréal. He has been a
fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, the Chair in
Canadian Studies at the Sorbonne, the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Chair at SUNY
in Plattsburgh, at the Institute for Research in Public Policy in Montreal.
He has also been a visiting professor or researcher at Queen’s, Carleton,
Victoria and Western, as well as at universities in Finland, France,
Australia and New Zealand. He is a Senior Scholar at the Institute for
Ethics in Public Life at SUNY Plattsburgh and a long-time supporter of the
Institute.
