The CEES Seminar Series presents:
Dr. Alex Sotola, Assistant Professor of Biology, SUNY Oneonta

*Maintenance of species boundaries: Using hybrids to study genomics of
reproductive isolation*
*Friday October 21st, **3:30pm. *
*Hudson 106*
The study of speciation revolves around understanding how pre- and
post-mating barriers influence genetic divergence. My work assessed
pre-mating barriers in hybridizing riverine fishes, showing that water
salinity is strongly associated with genome-average ancestry, suggesting
that the environment plays a strong role in hybridization dynamics and is
likely a pre-mating barrier. Subsequently, I assessed post-mating barriers,
which stem from genetic incompatibilities, in inbred populations of two
sister species of flowering plants. This work has demonstrated extreme
levels of non-Mendelian inheritance throughout their genome, suggestive of
multiple genetic incompatibilities which are indicative of strong
post-mating barriers.

There will be a reception starting at 3:00 outside of the lecture hall.
