*Thesis Defense: Equitable Environmental Literacy: Investigating
Interventions to Increase Environmental Literacy Among BIPOC Students*

*Friday Nov 18th, 3:30pm*

*Hudson 106*

The United States has a history of centuries of oppression and systemic
racism, and the modern environmental movement emerged from within this
context. For years, activists and scholars have attempted to break down
systems of oppression with varied success. Currently, social and
environmental injustices are at the forefront when dismantling systems of
oppression and systemic racism within the United States. At the
intersection of these injustices lies environmental education (EE).
Historically, environmental education has predominantly served white
populations, largely leaving out communities of color. As climate change
continues to worsen, youth need to be environmentally literate in order to
navigate through the numerous obstacles and shifts that will be brought on
by the new and ever-changing climate. This thesis investigates
interventions to increase environmental literacy among Black, Indigenous,
and People of Color (BIPOC) students and examines the systemic racism that
has been embedded throughout the field of natural resources and
environmental education (EE).
