Tuesday Reflections presents Dr. Emily Rollie, Associate Professor in the
Theatre Department at Central Washington University, speaking on "Cuts to
the Bone: An Ecofeminist Analysis of Catherine Banks's Play *Bone
Cage*" on *Tuesday,
March 22, 2022 at 4:30pm* in the Cardinal Lounge - Angell College Center.
Below is an abstract of Dr. Emily Rollie's presentation.
Drawing from a forthcoming article, Dr. Rollie's presentation examines Nova
Scotian playwright Catherine Banks's play *Bone Cage*, which won the 2008
Governor General's Literary Award for Drama and tells the story of Jamie
and his half-sister Chicky who live and work in a rural village that, with
an economy fueled by forestry industries such as clear cutting and sod
farming, is dependent upon the land for its existence but whose very
existence is threatened by the removal of the land and resources upon which
it depends. While the play's subject matter and setting have clear
eco-critical connections, Dr. Rollie argues that a deeper reading of Banks'
text reveals the nuanced ways that Banks' play provides an ecofeminist
critique of the complicated human relationship with the natural environment.
