*Shifting paradigms in managing a fire-dependent degraded pitch pine-scrub
oak barrens.*
Friday March 25th 3:30 Hudson 106
Reception prior to the talk at 3:30 outside of the lecture hall
Since 1991 managers at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve have employed a
variety of strategies to restore fire’s fundamental role in a congested
wildland urban interface. Limited ecological success and extreme fire
behavior posed significant challenges and resulted in a paradigm shift in
understanding of quality pine barrens, and revealed important differences
between restoration and maintenance fire regimes. This has improved
ecosystem viability and increased the distribution and abundance of rare
wildlife - including the complete recovery of the local Karner blue
butterfly.
