Noon, over Zoom (link to be provided)
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life continues its spring 2022 season of
colloquies with a further exploration of democracy under assault. In this
second dialogue, Institute director
Dr. Jonathan Slater and past Institute Fellow Dr. Jan Plaza will talk with
Henry Milner.
Milner has published nine books – the most recent a political memoir,
Participant
Observer: A life in Academia and Politics. He also is founder of the
journal Inroads. Milner earned his doctorate at Carleton University and
spent a year at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. He
joined the faculty of Vanier College in Montreal and was active in Quebec
politics, particularly in the Parti Québécois under René Lévesque. His work
has focused on Québec politics and education as well as on social democracy
in Scandinavia, where he lived and taught for a time. Milner is currently a
research fellow in electoral studies in Université de Montréal’s department
of political science. He has held the Chair in Canadian Studies at the
Sorbonne and served as the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Chair at SUNY Plattsburgh.
He also was a fellow at the Institute for Research in Public Policy. With
his wife, Frances Boylston, Milner recently established a non-profit
cultural center in the Dominican Republic.
In this second part of Democracy and Demagoguery, Milner will be examining
what he perceives as a disturbing and fundamental shift in U.S.
institutions. He will argue that the absolutism of the U.S. political
system has been conducive to such a shift and effectively has invited
demagoguery into the nation’s institutions.
Ethics Institute colloquies are open to the entire SUNY Plattsburgh
community.
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life is supported by generous gifts to
the Plattsburgh College Foundation.
