Building Resilience in the Transboundary Lake Champlain Richelieu River
Basin
*Friday April 29th, **3:30pm. *
*Hudson 106*

In the Spring of 2011, the Transboundary Lake Champlain Richelieu River
basin, situated in Vermont, New York, and Quebec, experienced unprecedented
flooding that prompted the development of a bi-national study, convened by
the International Joint Commission. For the first time, this study included
a Canadian and United States team of social scientists who assessed the
social acceptability and political feasibility of the proposed solutions to
flooding in the region. This talk will focus on the social science studies
carried out in the Lake Champlain Richelieu River basin, and the
implications that the results of these studies have for building resilience
in the region through flood management, mitigation, education, and
outreach.
