On behalf of Dr. Christopher Kirkey, the Center for the Study of Canada at
SUNY Plattsburgh invites you to a virtual presentation featuring Dr. Claire
Campbell, a history professor who teaches at Bucknell University.

Presentation Title:

*“**East Coast Anthropocene: Or, what the Maritimes can tell us about
today’s environmental crisis**”*

Presentation Date and Time:

*Wednesday, April 27, 2022*

*2:00 PM*

Overview:

When people think of the Canadian Maritimes, they probably picture Green
Gables or lighthouses – but the region has a long environmental history
with fossil fuels and industrial development that speaks directly to
today’s climate crisis. This lecture will visit several places and episodes
along the Atlantic coast that tell us about the environmental choices that
have shaped modern Canada as a whole – dating back to the eighteenth
century!

Presenter's Short Bio:

Claire Campbell is a Professor of History at Bucknell University, where she
teaches a wide range of courses on environmental history, including
coastal, urban, and colonial histories. She has taught at universities
across Canada and in Denmark, but having moved to Pennsylvania from Nova
Scotia, she has a particular interest in the northeast and the north
Atlantic; as with her current project, *Cities by the Sea, *which examines
the place of water in Atlantic Canada's port cities. Her research tends to
sit at the intersection between environmental history and public
humanities: how historic landscapes can teach us about environmental
sustainability and well-being.
