Tuesday Reflections presents Dr. Kirsten Isgro, Associate Professor of
Communication Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh, speaking on "Doulas as
Relationship-Centered Communication Conduits" on *Tuesday, April 26, 2022
at 4:30pm via Zoom*. Below is an abstract of Dr. Isgro's presentation.

Birth, full spectrum and end-of-life doulas are serving an important role
in healthcare, both in terms of patient-family support and health outcomes.
Birth and post-partum doulas emerged in the United States in the 1960s in
an effort to increase the agency of pregnant women and reduce unnecessary
medical interventions. Additionally, end-of-life and death doulas are
becoming increasingly common in palliative and hospice care. Studying the
larger doula movements in the United States from a relationship-centered
communication perspective offers a lens into the everyday lived experiences
of those facing life and death scenarios and the role communication plays
in these scenarios.
