Updates on the move from Moodle to Brightspace

Beginning with the Summer 2023 semester, Moodle will be decommissioned and
all online course activities at SUNY Plattsburgh will be delivered in the
new SUNY-wide Brightspace learning management system.
What’s new

The SUNY Distance Learning Environment (DLE) group is opening up some new
opportunities for faculty who want to get a head start on learning about
the Brightspace learning management system. Of particular interest are

   - a forthcoming “Fireside chat” session (April 20, 2022 from 3:30-4:30)
session, in which Empire State College will speak about its current
migration from Moodle to Brightspace (register at
   https://sunycpd.eventsair.com/dle-training/chats/Site/Register)
   - a set of “Scaled webinars” opening for registration on April 14, 2022;
these offer demonstrations of Brightspace features and functionality
along with opportunities to ask questions of Brightspace experts. Details
are available on the DLE training site: https://dle.suny.edu/training/

What’s unchanged

   - With the exception of the faculty who are involved in Plattsburgh’s
SUNY Online supported Accounting program, the college will continue to use
   Moodle until Summer 2023.
   - In the period between May 2022 and Fall 2022, TEL and the rest of
Information Technology Services will configure Plattsburgh’s Brightspace
instance, ensuring that Banner and LTI connections are in place, and
preparing the Accounting faculty with their transition to Brightspace as a
   pilot group.
   - Beginning in Fall 2022, opportunities for Brightspace training will
become more frequent, along with workshops that will help you to prepare
your Moodle sites for the move.
   - Over the Winter 2023 semester, faculty will be invited to identify
   Moodle sites for migration.
   - During the Spring 2023 semester, we’ll be offering day-long workshops
that will serve the dual function of introducing you to your migrated
content and also introducing you to the Brightspace environment.
   - Beginning in Summer 2023, Plattsburgh will be working exclusively in
Brightspace; Moodle will no longer be an option for the creation and
   delivery of course materials.

What to do now

   - You might want to start familiarizing yourself with the Brightspace
system. SUNY has set up a test site at
   https://sunyplay.brightspacedemo.com/d2l/login –there, you can request
an account that’ll get you access to a “sandbox” site to explore in. This
sandbox will be similar, but not necessarily an exact replica of what you
will be using once our tenant is in place.
   - Attend the Empire State College “Fireside chat” session (April 20,
2022 from 3:30-4:30) to get a sense of how one of our SUNY colleges is
managing the transition from Moodle. (Register at
   https://sunycpd.eventsair.com/dle-training/chats/Site/Register)
   - Consider signing up for one or all of the “Scaled webinars” opening
for registration on April 14, 2022; these offer demonstrations of
Brightspace features and functionality along with opportunities to ask
questions of Brightspace experts. Details are available on the DLE
   training site: https://dle.suny.edu/training/
   - Remain calm: most of us will be in Moodle until Summer 2023.
