An Ethics Institute colloquy with Dr. Sharifa Simon-Roberts

Thursday, April 14, 2022

11 a.m. - 12 p.m. over Zoom: https://bit.ly/3JmykPC

Institute for Ethics in Public Life

Dr. Sharifa Simon-Roberts graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a bachelor’s
degree in public relations/advertising and broadcast journalism. From
there, she earned her master’s from Boston University and doctorate from
Howard University. Today, Dr. Simon-Roberts works as an assistant professor
in intercultural communication and civic engagement in the Department of
Communication Studies at Emerson College. Her scholarly interests center on
television, new communication technologies, and culture, with specific
reference to groups traditionally underrepresented in the media—and society
as a whole. Much of her research is inspired by who she is at her core – a
Black woman from Trinidad and Tobago.

Our conversation with Dr. Simon-Roberts will center on the use of Netflix
by Black millennials and Black Generation Z. In particular, she will focus
on the importance of authentic media representation of characters
(especially characters who belong to groups that have traditionally been
marginalized) and issues that affect them.

Colloquies at the Ethics Institute are open to all members of the SUNY
Plattsburgh community.
