In the 2016 election cycle, the issue of climate change took up very few
minutes of all the campaign rhetoric. Not so for the 2020 election.
Climate change became a major discussion point, and the language used --
climate emergency, climate crisis, etc. -- was much more dire. There is no
question that the challenges we face today are existential: extinction of
species, climate system tipping points, and so on. The last four years of
course were lost to any meaningful policy initiatives. Not so now. The
Biden administration has put a focus on climate crises that involves
coordination between all of the major agencies of government. The EPA even
has its climate website back online.

Join Ethics Institute senior scholar and climate scientist Dr. Ray Johnson
in this final colloquy of the spring 2021 semester. Ray will share data on
and implications of current greenhouse gas levels and discuss the progress
of renewables in meeting our energy needs in the electricity generation and
transportation sectors of the economy. The administration’s commitments to
lowering GHG emissions by at least 50 percent from 2005 levels in this
decade will require major reforms to our economy, changes in the kind of
cars we drive, and much more. A climate conference in Glasgow in fall 2021
likely will call for a combined effort, a global response, and
extraordinary leadership among participants if we are to slow and even
reverse the effects of climate change.

The Institute for Ethics in Public Life is generously supported by gifts to
the Plattsburgh College Foundation. For further information about the
Ethics Institute, contact Dr. Jonathan Slater, director, at
