The Student Association will be hosting its annual commemoration marking
the 51st Anniversary of the Kent State and Jackson State University
shootings, on Thursday, May 6th at 12:15 pm, in the front of Kehoe at the
Memorial Tree and Plaque next to the flagpole.

A protest was scheduled for May 4, 1970 on the Kent State campus by
students who were voicing opposition to the Vietnam War and the military
intrusion in Cambodia. Although initially peaceful, after a National Guard
general told protesters to disperse, violence broke out. Four people were
killed and nine were injured when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on
the students gathered.

Just days later, on May 15 early in the morning, two students at Jackson
State University in Jackson, Mississippi, were shot and killed and 12 were
injured by police. The students had gathered to protest racism.

SUNY Plattsburgh’s first memorial was held in 1971 to commemorate the first
anniversary of the shootings. The Student Association organized that
memorial and has continued to commemorate these events every year since.

This year Dr. Alexander Enyedi, SUNY Plattsburgh President and Jennifer
Stanton, Student Association Vice President will be offering brief remarks
followed by a vocal performance by Barbara Criss. Facial masks required
for those attending.
