Greetings:
A final reminder of Part One of our spring 2021 Three-Part Virtual Series
titled, "Conversations on Canada". Details follow for this event, featuring
Dr. Bernard Perley, Director/Center for Indigenous Studies at the
University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and President-Elect for
the Society for Linguistic Anthropology:
Presentation Title:
"Home and Native Land: Reconciling Experiential Canadas"
Overview:
Colonial Canada has exercised centuries of cartographies of discovery,
conquest, and erasure of its Indigenous peoples. Today's call for
reconciliation promises some measure of healing but that is not enough.
Only by remediating these cartographies of erasure can we "map" a future
Canada based on true healing and sustainable futures.
Presenter's Short Bio:
Dr. Bernard Perley is a member of the Maliseet Nation from Tobique First
Nation, New Brunswick, Canada. He is the Director of the Institute for
Critical Indigenous Studies (CIS) at the University of British Columbia and
President-Elect for the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. Dr. Perley's
ongoing research is dedicated toward revitalizing Indigenous languages and
Indigenous sovereignty and survivance. His critical creativity is expressed
through cartoons drawn for "Anthropology News", as well as his own personal
series, "Having Reservations".
