Tuesday Reflections presents Dr. Chris Moss, Assistant Professor in the
Criminal Justice Department speaking on Combating Opioid* and Heroin
Addiction with Drug Courts *on Tuesday, April 13 at 4:30pm via Zoom only. Below
is an abstract of the presentation.

This presentation examines the negative effects of the ongoing opioid
epidemic and offers sensible ways to improve outcomes through drug courts.
Overdose death rates and hospitalizations for opioid addicts have all
increased over the past decade. These numbers have only worsened during the
current pandemic, in part, because essential treatment services such as
drug courts, counseling, and AA/NA meetings decreased as a result of
lockdowns and social distancing policies. Besides negative health
consequences, addiction also contributes to other societal problems such as
crime, unemployment, and child neglect. Drug courts are a way that addicts
can receive treatment, which can eventually lead to improved health,
criminal justice, and other societal outcomes. However, a critical
examination of the ways these courts can expand and work with other
community based organizations such as healthcare, social services, businesses,
and housing could lead to policy solutions that will improve outcomes for
both addicts and society.
