On Wednesday, March 31, members of the SUNY Plattsburgh campus community
gathered over Zoom for a frank exchange about a racist comment posted on
Facebook in May 2020. The lengthy discussion, led by Dr, Michelle Cromwell,
opened the door to further dialogue about racism on campus and the efforts
we need to undertake as a community to become an antiracist institution. In
order to continue that dialogue, Dr. Cromwell will join Institute director
Dr. Jonathan Slater in conversation at the Ethics Institute on Wednesday,
April 14, The May 2020 incident raises serious moral concerns for our
collective consideration. For example, what ought we do within our campus
environment to promote a climate of reflection that might prompt members of
our community to pause, think, and stop before uttering, sending or posting
offending speech? Further, what are some ways we can go about instilling a
conscious sense of personal accountability in which we all see the
offensiveness of such speech and are able to talk publicly and candidly
about it?
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life is generously supported by gifts to
the Plattsburgh College Foundation. For further information about the
Ethics Institute, contact Dr. Jonathan Slater, director, at
slaterjr at plattsburgh.edu. Ethics Institute colloquies are open to the
entire SUNY Plattsburgh community.
