Message from the Department of Anthropology at SUNY Plattsburgh.

In light of the recent events involving a SUNY Plattsburgh employee's
racist comment over social media, we as the Department of Anthropology
would like to reaffirm and restate our commitment to diversity of all kinds
and to our students' identities. People who choose to broker in hate or
devaluation of others should not be the loudest voices on campus. Use of
inflammatory hate language is not acceptable and does not reflect the
values that we teach and attempt to inspire in our students. Words matter,
whether motivated by hate, by ignorance, or by insensitivity, the user
remains responsible for what they utter. We call for a culture of
responsibility on campus. We abhor hate speech and believe that it ought to
be called out.

We, as anthropologists and members of the Plattsburgh community, support
diversity in all its forms, we support people of diverse identities and
cultures. We support and value the diversity in each and every one of our
students and we value the diversity that SUNY students bring to the
Plattsburgh area. Our support for our students comes from our deep
understanding of humanity and culture; diversity is to be treasured,
fostered, and respected. It is essential that members of our community be
accepting and inclusive and actively reject discourses and behaviors that
demean or devalue people, particularly on the basis of their identities or
perceived differences.

Please stand with us and share our message. Diversity is good and it is
good for everybody.

Whoever you are, and wherever you are from, we welcome you with open arms,

The Faculty of the Department of Anthropology

Redcay Hall

SUNY Plattsburgh
