On Behalf of the League of Women Voters,
Dear Plattsburgh State Community,
Happy *National Voter Registration Day* from the *League of Women Voters of
the North Country*!
The November Election is around the corner - your vote is your VOICE and
your POWER!
Who can vote in NYS? U.S. citizens aged 18 and older, residing in New York
at least 30 days before an election can* register to vote by the deadline
of Friday, October 9, 2020. * You can register by mailing or bringing in a
completed voter registration form to your County Board of Elections; or
online by using a NY Driver's License/ID and a Social Security Number at
https://voterreg.dmv.ny.gov/MotorVoter/ ; or in person at the County Board
of Elections (BOE).
NOTE: 16 and 17 year-olds may preregister to vote but cannot vote until
they turn 18. Also, an individual cannot register if they claim the right
to vote elsewhere. Other restrictions include the individual must not be in
jail or on parole for a felony conviction (unless parolee pardoned or
restored rights of citizenship).
NYS registered voters may *vote in one of three ways: *
1. In person on *Election Day* at your designated polling location, *November
3, 2020*.
2. During the 9-day *Early Voting Period which runs October 24 - Nov 1,
2020* at the designated County site (Clinton County Government Center for
Clinton residents; Essex County Public Safety Building, 702
Stowersville Road, Lewis for Essex residents). Check your County BOE
website for hours. Vote early and avoid longer lines on Election Day.
3. *By Absentee Ballot *which you can apply for either online at NYSBOE
Portal https://www.elections.ny.gov/votingabsentee.html, or by filling out
an application or letter of request with a postmark, email or fax no later
than 7 days before the election (by October 27, 2020); or apply in-person
up to the day before the election (November 2 deadline). Be aware that
despite the above deadlines, the Post Office has advised they cannot
guarantee timely delivery of ballots applied for less than 15 days before
an election.
To use the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) Electronic
Voter Registration Application to *register to vote or to update the
information you have on file with the New York State Board of Elections *- for
example, a new address or changing a party enrollment, you will need:
• your New York State DMV driver license, permit or Non-Driver ID number
• the Zip Code currently on record with the DMV
• the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN)
NOTE: If you are having trouble registering online at
https://voterreg.dmv.ny.gov/MotorVoter/
double check your document number - it's easy to mix characters, like the
number '1' for the letter 'I'
and the ZIP Code DMV has on record (DMV might not be aware of a recent
move).
Help spread the word...tell friends and family to register to vote, or
check their voter registration at vote411.org, and PLAN YOUR VOTE!
With best wishes from the League of Women Voters of the North Country,
Diana Wardell and Helen Nerska
Co-Presidents, LWV of the North Country
