The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Theatre and director Keith Boldon are
holding another evening of auditions for The New Black Fest's Hands Up: 7
Testaments, 7 Playwrights on *September 24th, 2020 from 6-10pm on Zoom.*
*WHAT IS THIS PLAY ABOUT?*
In light of the police shootings of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and
John Crawford III in Beavercreek, Ohio, among others, The New Black Fest
commissioned seven emerging black playwrights to write 10-15 minute
monologues that explore their feelings about the well-being of black in a
culture of institutional profiling. This play is still sadly relevant given
our present moment and the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud
Arberry, Elijah McClain, and countless others.
There are 7-9 roles for black students and there are several roles for men
and women.
*WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO AUDITION?*
Keith has asked auditioners to find a monologue in the play that speaks to
them and audition with a 1-2 minute part of that monologue.
Students are asked log in to the zoom auditions at 6pm. We'll coordinate
auditioners into break out rooms and each person will have an opportunity
to present their 1-2 minute monologue to Keith and his student assistant
directors.
*DO I HAVE TO BE ON CAMPUS/IN PERSON TO AUDITION AND PARTICIPATE?*
Nope. Not at all.
This production will be completely virtual. So if you're learning remotely
this semester and you're in Brooklyn or Houston or Plattsburgh, you can
audition.
This is going to be an exciting and innovative project of creating a
streamed live theatrical performance. And you could be a part of it!
*OKAY, I'M INTERESTED, WHAT DO I DO?*
Please check out our Moodle page where you can read the script. The Hands
Up script is also available at the Feinberg Library under THE245.
All audition materials (audition form, sign up sheet, scripts, zoom link,
director contact info, etc.) are available at the following link:

*FYI: Moodle will ask you to enroll, but that's the platform, you won't
actually be enrolled in anything - it will give you access to the
information. If this weirds you out too much, please reach out to Dr.
Shawna Mefferd Kelty and she'll send you the links and digital copies you
will need.*

*WHO'S KEITH ARTHUR BOLDEN AND WHY SHOULD I BE INTERESTED IN THIS PLAY?*
Keith Bolden is an actor, director, and professor at Spelman College in
Atlanta. He'll be working with our students (you could be one of them) via
Zoom to tell this story on our campus, for our campus, community, families.
Here's Keith Arthur Bolden’s trailer for HANDS UP at

-
it's a trailer created by our guest director inviting students to engage in
this meaningful and incredibly relevant project.
*I CAN'T MAKE IT THIS THURSDAY, CAN I STILL AUDITION?*
Can't make it? No problem. Students can submit a pre-recorded audition
video for consideration - there's more information on our Moodle Page. The
deadline for video submissions is September 25, 2020 (do your best). Please
click the Moodle link for video submissions or reach out to Dr. Kelty (
smeff001 at plattsburgh.edu).
We can't wait to see your brilliance and bravery on Thursday. Come prepared
(as best you can) and come with any questions, too.
