Tuesday Reflections presents Dr. Breea Willingham, Associate Professor in
Criminal Justice speaking on "Jamii Sisterhood: Building a Movement For and
About Black Women in Higher Education in Prison" on Tuesday, November 17,
2020 at 5:00pm via Zoom only. Below is an abstract of Dr. Willingham's
presentation.

Dr. Breea Willingham, Associate Profesor of Criminal Justice, will be
joined by her colleagues Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad, Associate Professor of
Criminology at Howard Universty, and Dr. Erin Corbett, co-founder and CEO
of Second Chance Educational Alliance, to explain how COVID-19 motivated
them to create the Jamii Sisterhood - a movement for and about Black women
teaching in and conducting research about prisons.

This presentation will center the experiences and voices of Black women in
higher education in prison (HEP) to highlight the issues they face when
engaging in critical work in and about the carceral state. The Jamii
Executive Team (JET) - Drs. Willingham, Muhammad, and Corbett - will
discuss their founding of this revolutionary community of Black women, and
the work they have been doing during COVID-19 to fight racial inequity in
the HEP.  Simply put, Drs. Willingham, Muhammad, and Corbett grew sick and
tired of the overwhelmingly white HEP field, and the perpetual silencing of
Black women in HEP.  No longer interested in begging for a seat at the
table, this trio of Black women scholars decided to build their own table
and chairs to create a community for and about Black women in higher
education in prison.
