to consider taking advantage of the opportunity and registering for this
course.

AAS 390WB1 Special Topics: African-American Sport Studies
CRN# 4280, Zoom - MWF: 9 - 9:50 a.m.

This course will provide a historical and contemporary overview of the role
of race and sports in the United States. Through a focus on
African-American athletes, this course will examine their experiences and
representations in American sporting culture. Using an interdisciplinary
approach, this course will draw upon historical, media, literary and
sociological studies of the African-American sporting experience. First,
the course will provide students with an overview of the fields of Sport
History and Sport Studies. Secondly, the course will examine the history of
African-American professional and amateur athletes and their connection to
struggles for racial justice during the Jim Crow Era and the Civil Rights
Era. Next, the course will address national and transnational media
representations and circulations of Black athletes. Finally, the course
will also explore contemporary athletes and their relationship to activism
and resistance in sports.

For further information about this course, please contact instructor Dr.
Samantha White (swhit041 at plattsburgh.edu) or Africana Studies Program
Director Dr. Elizabeth Onasch (eonas001 at plattsburgh.edu). Thank you.
