University Survey Support Endorsement Process
Students and employees can receive support in the development and
administration of surveys through University Survey Support (USS). To
submit a request for support, complete the Campus Survey Form
<https://plattsburgh.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/526/administration/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=5742>
or contact OIE at plattsburgh.edu. USS now offers survey endorsement. Endorsed
surveys signal campuswide confidence in the project’s design and plans for
analysis. To learn more, check out the summary of services available
through USS, attached to this email.
Data Trivia and Last Month’s Results
Last month we investigated demographic trends across divisions and
departments. A network diagram provides one way of exploring these trends.
Here we have “nodes” (red and green dots) that represent division of
declared major and race and “edges” (lines) connecting nodes that represent
student counts. The length of each line is inversely proportional to the
student count (the greater the count, the shorter the line). This diagram
provides information about racial representation which can be further
scrutinized to motivate action. For example, do racial representation
proportions match enrollment proportions?
This month, we take a break from challenges to introduce some trivia! Did
you know that the field of institutional research dates back to the early
1900s where universities began systematically collecting data to improve
student success? Fast forward to 1986 when IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary
Education Data System) was established by the Department of Education. It
wasn’t until 1997 that a formal Graduation Rate was introduced by IPEDS.
Prior to this, institutions could determine how they wanted to track and
report completion. This data system and its standardized completion metrics
are vital to today’s college rankings, such as by US News & World Report
<https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/suny-plattsburgh-2849>, where SUNY
Plattsburgh currently ranks in the top 50 of Regional Universities and 19th
in Top Public Schools.
In closing, OIE is thankful for your partnership, curiosity, and support of
evidence-informed decisions. Here’s to a season of data-inspired action and
the strengthening of a campus culture supported by collaboration and
transparency!
