Dear Students,
Welcome back Cardinals returning for the spring semester and all those who
have just joined the Cardinal community!
I hope you will take a few minutes to review the critically important Title
IX
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/index.html>
content of this email. Specifically, you will find information and details
of how to report experiences of discrimination, harassment, and/or violence
and the college's current policies, reporting options and available
resources.
Prior to now, you may have experienced limited education and conversation
in relation to gender, sexual orientation, sexuality, as well as sexual
boundaries. Please know you are not alone in this. We are here to support
you and help you understand what the expectations are, so that you do not
violate the safety of others and you are empowered to communicate what your
expectations are as an individual. It is important that we strive for an
inclusive environment where all voices can be heard and individuals feel
empowered to seek support when they may need it.
Title IX Update
New Title IX Regulations went into effect on August 14th, 2020. Please see
the attached document “Sexual & Interpersonal Violence Response Information
Sheet for Students” This will give you information on how these changes
have been approached by SUNY Plattsburgh.
Ongoing Initiatives
The spring semester is an opportunity to continue with previous
initiatives, as well as engage new ideas and beginnings. The Title IX
office is continually expanding upon the support we offer students, faculty
and staff.
If you have ideas, questions, or concerns, the Title IX office would like
to hear from you. You Matter. We are here because of you.
We are excited to continue working with student organizations and leaders,
as well as campus resources on some initiatives which are ongoing or new:
● Know Your Resources Virtual Connect
Resource panels began being offered in fall 2015. Students, faculty, and
staff will be able to connect with campus and community resources, such as
Title IX, Student Conduct, law enforcement, counseling, and advocacy
services to learn more about processes and roles. An invitation will be
sent out to the campus as final details are established.
● Title IX Liaison Program
In fall 2020, we launched a liaison program in concert with departments
across campus. The program is working to increase outreach, prevention, and
education in relation to sexual and interpersonal violence. If you would
like to join, please reach out to Zyaijah Nadler: znadl001 at plattsburgh.edu
● PEDAL Title IX Peer Education Program
Our revamped peer education program strives to give students an opportunity
to lead and educate peers, while also offering students an opportunity to
connect on difficult and important conversations & learning led by peers.
For more information, please check out the basis of the program here: Get
Involved

and/or reach out to Zyaijah Nadler: znadl001 at plattsburgh.edu
● Training, Awareness & Outreach Opportunities
If you are interested in engaging in some of the workshops or trainings
available on campus in regards to gender discrimination, harassment, and/or
interspersonal and sexual violence, you can check out some of our content

which
has been added to SUNY Plattsburgh’s Website. If you would like specific
sessions for a group or individually, please contact

-
Consent Week - 2nd week of February. This will include extra emphasis on
consent, healthy boundaries, and communication in sexual and romantic
relationships.
-
March is Women’s History Month - be on the lookout for information that
highlights the accomplishments of women, as well as events and initiatives
to celebrate this important month and important women.
-
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - while the Title IX office
focuses on this issue daily, during this month, you will see even more of a
highlight that focuses on statistics, education, and resources in a
collaborative effort.
-
Bi-Annual SUNY Climate Survey - within the next couple of weeks, you
will receive communication to voluntarily participate in the bi-annual
climate survey which looks to assess your knowledge of resources, as well
as individual experiences in regards to sexual harassment, sexual &
interpersonal violence.
Final Note
As a member of the SUNY Plattsburgh campus community, you are connected to
many people who made the choice to come to campus from various backgrounds,
areas of the country and world. I encourage you to reach out to others to
build new relationships, connections and understanding.
If you see someone in harm or making an effort to cause harm, please get
involved in helping. We need all community members engaged in interrupting
and dismantling any environments that support or foster violence.
Challenge language. Challenge conduct. Impact is more important than intent.
