Good afternoon, Cardinals!
Thanks to our concentrated collective efforts to adhere to the Cardinal
Pledge and control the spread of COVID-19, we are thrilled to announce that
SUNY Plattsburgh has been approved to enter the first phase of our Cardinal
Athletics and Recreational Sports Reopening Plan.
This plan includes the reopening of the Fitness Center and a limited number
of athletic and recreational sport opportunities. Our ability to offer
these activities and to expand programming, in the future, is contingent
upon continued vigilance and safe behavior necessary for remaining healthy
as a community.
*Fitness Center*
We are pleased to share that our campus fitness center will be reopening on
Monday! This is in alignment with NYS guidance for the reopening of fitness
center operations with appropriate safety measures and Department of Health
approval. Our operational plan received immediate approval and we applaud
the efforts of our fitness center team in preparing a plan focused on
student, faculty and staff safety.
The fitness center is located on the first floor of Memorial Hall. Group
activities such as spinning, dance and other classes will take place in
Algonquin hall. Information regarding activities, hours of operation and
fitness center health and safety measures may be found here
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/athletics/recreational/fitness-center/index.html>
.
*Recreational Sports*
A number of recreational sport clubs have also been approved to begin play
next week. Only those activities that have been classified as "low
risk" by *New
York Reopening Guidelines* will be offered at this time. These activities
include tennis, frisbee, marksmanship, disc golf, golf and fishing.
Additional activities may begin later this semester, upon further guidance
and the campus community’s ongoing ability to control COVID-19. Specific
information regarding sign-up and upcoming events will be listed on the
recreation and fitness website here
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/athletics/recreational/index.html>.
*Intercollegiate Athletics*
In the first phase of restarting Cardinal Athletics, men’s and women’s
soccer, cross country running, tennis and volleyball will resume
activities. Teams will adhere to strict NCAA and New York state guidelines,
which limit workout/practice groups to 10 people (including coaches).
Individuals will practice social distancing and wear masks/face coverings
when social distancing cannot be maintained. Players will not be allowed to
share equipment, and training sessions will focus on individual skill
development, strengthening and conditioning. There will be no scrimmages or
full-field/court play, and locker rooms will remain closed.
We are committed to offering you the best #PlattsLife Experience possible
during these challenging times, but we can only do so by working together
as a team. So, thank you for doing your part by wearing face coverings,
social distancing, abiding by the Cardinal Pledge and filling out your
daily health screening.
We’re looking forward to continued success and good news that will allow us
to expand our services, programs and activities. Together, we can do this
because we are #CardinalStrong.
*Cardinal Pledge*
I will wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash my hands, avoid large
social gatherings/parties, stay home when sick and inform the Health Center.
