[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Thomas Carlsen

Dear Members of Our Campus Community,

We’ve learned about the July 9, 2025 death of Thomas Carlsen, retired
counselor in the Student Health and Counseling Center. He was 81.

Mr. Carlsen was a 1966 SUNY Plattsburgh alum, earning a bachelor’s in
liberal arts. He earned his master’s in school psychology in 1971 and began
a tenure in the counseling center that spanned nearly 30 years.

In October 1976 he was appointed acting director of the center, a post he
held until June 30, 1977 at which time, he returned to his counselor
position. He retired in December 1998.

Following his tenure at SUNY Plattsburgh, he became a woodworker and
homebuilder.
