[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Joseph Swinyer

Dear Members of the Campus Community,

We were saddened to learn of the death of long-time librarian Joseph
Swinyer, who died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024 at the age of 83.

Mr. Swinyer began his tenure at SUNY Plattsburgh as an assistant librarian
in July 1964, a title he maintained until being promoted to senior
assistant librarian in September 1978. He was then promoted to associate
librarian three years later. Mr. Swinyer retired in June 1995.

A 1962 graduate with a degree in elementary education, Mr. Swinyer taught
elementary grades for a while in the former Keese Mills School, Paul
Smiths, N.Y. near Saranac Lake, and then in the Peru Central School
District. He then began his tenure here. In 1970, Mr. Swinyer earned his
master’s in elementary education.

After retirement, Mr. Swinyer worked as a consultant for New York state’s
Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services. An animal lover, he also
volunteered for the Adirondack Humane Society Thrift Shop.
