Dear Campus Community,

Beginning today through Thursday, the National Weather Service has
predicted temperatures in the 90s accompanied by high humidity. This will
lead to heat index values or "feel-like" temperatures surpassing 100°F over
several days.

While it is anticipated that our campus activities will continue, it is
crucial for everyone to take precautions and remain mindful of the
challenging conditions. Please consider implementing the following measures
to mitigate potential heat-related issues:

   1.

Adjust Outdoor Activities: Where feasible, shorten outdoor activities,
take frequent breaks and avoid strenuous tasks during peak heat hours
   (typically between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.).
   2.

Stay Hydrated: Ensure ample access to fluids and encourage hydration.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.
   3.

Indoor Work Adjustments: If operationally feasible, consider adjusting
schedules to prioritize indoor work activities during peak heat periods.
   4.

Health Awareness: Familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat-related
illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat rash.
Know when to seek medical assistance and how to respond appropriately
   <https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/emergency/weather/hot/> to see
   detailed symptoms and actions).

Supervisors should allow employees breaks as needed, and to assign
alternate duties and tasks that allow employees to be inside air
conditioned buildings as often as possible for the remainder of this week.
If you require a place to cool off, please note that there are cooling
sites available on campus, such as the Feinberg Library.

Employees working in offices without air conditioning should discuss
options with their supervisor if their working environment becomes too
warm. These options can include moving to an alternate location
temporarily, such as the Library, or leaving for the day with appropriate
charge to leave accruals.

Please take these precautions seriously and look out for each other during
this period of elevated temperatures.
