Dear University Campus Community,
Yesterday, area law enforcement intercepted and arrested an armed
individual in the City of Plattsburgh for allegedly attempting to bring
weapons onto the premises of the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital
(CVPH). This incident caused a significant disruption in our community and
has understandably left many of us feeling shaken and concerned for our
safety. I acknowledge the impact that this has had on our campus.
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude for the swift and
decisive action taken by our University Police, in collaboration with local
and state law enforcement agencies. Their quick response ensured that the
situation was resolved efficiently and without harm to anyone.
Additionally, I extend my sincere appreciation to our University Police for
promptly informing the campus community - through email, text, and phone -
of the incident that occurred, and for their reassurance that there was no
longer a threat to public safety.
In response to this situation, I want to remind all employees and students
to review and update their cell phone information to ensure that everyone
receives emergency alerts similar to the one that went out yesterday. To
review and update your SUNY NY Alert profile:
1.
Log into MyPlattsburgh
2.
Select "Update my NY Alert Contact Info" under NY Alert - Emergency
Notification at the left of your screen
3.
Select "Emergency Alert Contact Information (NY-Alert)"
4.
Follow the on-screen instructions
Additionally, all employees should complete their required Safe Campus
training modules as soon as possible if they have not already done so.
These modules are designed to prepare you in advance of a crisis, and to
equip you with the necessary information and resources to prioritize your
health and safety, as well as the health and safety of those around you.
You can access these training modules on the left hand side of the
MyPlattsburgh <https://www.plattsburgh.edu/portal/> tab of our website,
under Safe Colleges. Employees can also receive on-site training from the
University Police Department to understand better how to respond
effectively within their specific workspaces in the event of a crisis on
campus. To schedule these individualized trainings, please contact
Emergency Management at carabamj at plattsburgh.edu.
Finally, please remember that support and resources are available for those
who may need assistance in coping with the aftermath of this incident.
Students are encouraged to reach out to the Health and Counseling Center at
518-564-3086 or via email at healthcenter at plattsburgh.edu. Additionally,
the Student Assistance Program (SAP) continues to provide free, 24/7
telehealth counseling services accessible by texting or calling
1-800-327-2251, or by visiting portal.BHSonline.com
<https://portal.bhsonline.com/auth/hashcode> and entering the username:
SUNYPlattsburgh.
Employees are encouraged to utilize the resources provided by the Employee
Assistance Program at eap at plattsburgh.edu for support and referrals to
additional community resources and services.
As we reflect on the events of yesterday, let us commit ourselves to doing
all we can to positively contribute to our community's preparedness and
response protocols as we move forward. Together, we will work toward
protecting the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community.
Sincerely,
Alexander Enyedi
President
