Colleagues,

It's amazing to think that a year has passed since I wrote to you to
express my excitement at having arrived here at SUNY Plattsburgh and for
the work we would undertake together. The time has now come for me to take
my leave, and I hope you'll indulge me this one last message.

I know from experience that it can be difficult for an organization to
fully engage with a period of interim leadership; it's often easier to go
on autopilot and simply wait until things are no longer "interim." The
opportunity cost of such an approach, however, is not insignificant. That
didn't happen here, and I appreciate the collaborative spirit with which
you undertook the year. I found this campus dedicated to moving forward
even as it patiently did its best to acclimate a temporary leader to its
rigors and mysteries. I hope to have made some contributions to your
success, but what I really come away with is a sense of honor to have been
associated with you as individuals and with SUNY Plattsburgh as a
university. For my administrative work I've always tried to live up to the
notion that one should lead - be it from the front, the middle, or behind -
and not merely preside. Anything done well in higher education is not done
alone, and I can certainly attest to the fact that collectively we didn't
just preside over AY 2023-24.

Dr. Marcus Tye now joins you as provost. I'm thrilled for Dr. Tye
because I know how much he will enjoy working with all of you. I'm elated
for the university for how much it will benefit from Dr. Tye's leadership.
I wish all of you the very best as you begin this new chapter, one that I
know will be productive and rewarding for students, faculty, staff, and
community constituents!

When I am once again ensconced in my retirement back in Bellingham, I
will fondly recall my time here. The winter wasn't as cold or inclement as
advertised and the summer was hotter and more humid than anticipated. What
I'll remember most, though, is the beauty of the place and the warmth of
the people. I will be watching closely from the West Coast, excited about
your future and rooting for you as you shape it.

Sincerely,

Brent Carbajal
