Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to share that Dr. Brent Carbajal, who served for nine years as
provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Washington
University before retiring one year ago, will begin as our interim provost
and senior vice president for academic affairs beginning Monday, Aug. 14.

Dr. Carbajal's work at Western Washington spanned more than 25 years and
also included roles as professor of Spanish, department chair and dean. His
CV is attached for your review.

Western is located in Bellingham, Wash., about 20 miles south of the
Canadian border. While Western is more than three times our size, the
university and its surrounding community have many similar qualities and
distinctions that parallel ours. Dr. Carbajal's depth of experience and his
enthusiasm for the position will serve us well for the next academic year.

Priorities for Dr. Carbajal's year-long appointment include a focus on the
budget and financial stability of the division, academic program
development, student retention, shared governance, and an examination of
the structure and organization of academic affairs.

Along with Dr. Carbajal joining the campus leadership team, I have also
elevated Heather Haskins to the president's cabinet. Since arriving on
campus in fall 2021, Heather has led our strategic communications and
marketing efforts well and worked to improve our focus and productivity in
these areas. With the change will come growing clarity and direction across
divisions, as well as improvements in our internal communications efforts.

Looking ahead toward the fall semester, our new student enrollment is on
pace to meet or exceed our goal of 1,700. We are still processing
state-side funding from SUNY for the new fiscal year, but we will close the
last fiscal year with revenues and expenses about even, giving us roughly
the same $14 million carry forward balance as a year ago. We will have more
to say about both enrollment and budget as we enter the fall semester.

There is much to be excited about. More will also be shared at our annual
President's Welcome on Friday, Aug. 25 at 8 a.m. in the Warren Ballrooms.
We will also celebrate with several award presentations.

Alex Enyedi
President
