[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Dr. Noel Smith

Dear Members of our Campus Community,

We’re saddened to have learned of the death of Dr. Noel Smith, professor
emeritus of psychology, who died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022 in Sarasota, Fla. He
was 88.

Dr. Smith joined the psychology faculty in 1963, retiring from teaching 32
years later in 1995 yet he did not stop his academic research. He held the
title of Courtesy Professor at the University of Florida and was a fellow
in the American Psychological Association.

He also held offices in the American Association of University Professors
where he was active in advocating for academic freedom. He authored
multiple books including "Current Systems in Psychology: Theory, Research,
and Applications" (with an edition in Russian) and "An Analysis of Ice Age
Art: Its Psychology and Belief System;" he co-authored with J.R. Kantor
"The Science of Psychology: An Interbehavioral Survey" (with an edition in
Spanish); and he published numerous journal articles on prehistorical,
historical, and interbehavioral psychology. He published his last book,
"The Myth of Mind: A Challenge to Mainstream Psychology and its Imposed
Constraints," in 2016 at the age of 82.

A memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements are entrusted
