[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Dr. Charles Simpson

Dear Campus Colleagues,

We were saddened to have just learned of the death of Dr. Charles Simpson,
professor emeritus of sociology and criminal justice, May 3, 2021 at his
home in Burlington, Vt. He was 79.

Dr. Simpson joined the faculty as an assistant professor in September 1978.
He was promoted to associate professor in 1984 and attained full
professorship in September 1993. He retired in September 2012.

He remained active on campus and United University Professions even in
retirement. As recent as February he discussed food insecurity during an
Institute for Ethics in Public Life via Zoom.

Dr. Simpson had written extensively about environmental responsibility and
threats to agricultural systems. During his 34 years on the SUNY
Plattsburgh faculty, Simpson co-directed the college's Southern Mexico
Program, a semester-long study abroad experience for liberal arts, nursing,
and education students. He recently had his first novel, "Uncertain
Harvest," published by Fomite. The work leads the reader on a global chase
after “a reporter stumbles on a plot by an international corporation to use
genetic technology to monopolize the world's food production and destroy
ecosystems.”

A formal obituary and details on a memorial are pending and will be
published in the Burlington Free Press.

Our condolences to Dr. Anita Rapone, SUNY Plattsburgh professor emerita of
history and Latin American studies, and to all who knew and loved him.
