[Important Information for Employees] The death of Dr. Alfred Light

Dear Members of our Campus Community,

Dr. Alfred “Al” Light, second president of Clinton Community College, Class
of 1950 alumnus, and former Campus School teacher, psychology department
member, and father of Dr. Stephen Light, professor of sociology at the
college, died Monday, July 5, 2021. He was 96.

Dr. Light served with Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division
in Europe and Northern Africa during World War II, receiving the Bronze
Star for his service. Upon returning to the United States, he earned his
degree at SUNY Plattsburgh in education, a master’s in education at the
University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate at Penn State.

He joined the faculty in the early 1950s, initially teaching at the Campus
School, which is now Sibley Hall, and later joined the faculty of
psychology, serving until 1969 at which time he became vice president of
Adirondack Community College, where SUNY Plattsburgh’s branch campus now
resides.

In 1971, Dr. Light returned to the North Country when he took over as the
second president of Clinton Community College, presiding over its first
commencement. He retired from CCC in 1986.

Dr. Light was active in the local community where he was a member of the
Plattsburgh Kiwanis Club for nearly 50 years, and in 1981 he became the 23rd
holder of the title “Irishman of the Year,” bestowed by the Chamber of
Commerce yearly March 17.

A remembrance service was held July 12 in Burlington, Vt., where he had
lived at Harborview Senior Communities with his wife of 67 years, Ella,
whom he met at SUNY Plattsburgh during their junior year. She is a member
of the same graduating class.
