Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am excited to share with you a unique opportunity to help in the fight
against COVID-19. SUNY Plattsburgh is joining the New York State Department
of Health (NYSDOH) in testing a new *COVID Alert NY* app. Your
participation in the beta testing, before the app is released to the
public, will ensure a highly effective new tool will be available in the
fight against COVID. As compensation for your time, the vendor will email,
the first 300 participants, *a $25 gift card* at the end of the study.

The COVID Alert NYApp uses a completely private and secure Bluetooth-based
technology that Apple and Google developed in conjunction with MIT. It is
secure, using the latest technologies based on HIPAA guidelines and NYSDOH
standards on data privacy and protection. It will not collect personally
identifiable information, cannot track your location and will access
information only by consent.

*HOW THE STUDY WORKS*

1. Download the beta app onto your smartphone.

2. Activate the app and get familiar with it.

3. Leave the app open on your phone.

During the testing period, you may receive one or more *simulated* alerts.
These alerts are part of the process of testing the app. *They are not real
alerts. *At the end of the week, you will be asked to fill out a survey and
provide feedback on the app's usefulness, usability and privacy, as well as
anything else you wish to share.

*WHY PARTICIPATE?*

1. When COVID Alert NY is released to the public, it will help with contact
tracing. A user will be able to identify if they have been in close contact
with another app user who voluntarily reported a positive COVID test.

2. The app will be most effective if many people are engaged in this
testing phase.

3. This study will take just four days to complete, and your participation
could help save lives.

*SIGN UP FOR THE STUDY NOW* <https://forms.gle/NPkhhSHfSusS6j4u7> This
study begins on Monday, September 14.

COVID.
