Dear Campus Community,

Today marks the beginning of *Domestic Violence Awareness Month* which is
highlighted by *events*
<https://docs.google.com/document/u/2/d/e/2PACX-1vQ84mqg268wIYr_3PcHLmvD1DaqnrwSdYZrlD7bYvUXQFRgO7IGEzLLprjhADiXCWenJ-Om_np89iaG/pub?urp=gmail_link&gxids=7757>
throughout
the Plattsburgh community during the month of October.

During this month and beyond, we encourage you to get involved in awareness
and education. We hope that these initiatives will encourage
acknowledgement of how serious the issue of domestic violence is for many
on a daily basis.

Interpersonal violence includes domestic violence, dating violence and
stalking. It is one of the largest crises in our country and in our
communities. People from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences -
some of whom may be close to you, and/or including you, suffer in
silence. During
the COVID-19 pandemic, those affected by interpersonal violence are more
isolated and there has been a nationwide rise in domestic violence.

While supporting someone who is experiencing violence can be difficult,
individuals must be able to make personal decisions to leave abusive
environments or seek support on their own terms. No one should be pressured
to make decisions before they are ready or judged for not speaking out. It
is important that we foster a community where each of our members works
toward the safety and support of others, and communicates clearly:

*You are not alone. You will be supported. You Matter.*

*Important College Policy Update*

In an effort to enhance what we are doing to reduce barriers to reporting,
we have added an amnesty clause to our Social Distancing & Face Covering
Policy
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/management-services/campus-handbook/section-viii-health-safety/social-distancing-face-covering.html>.
This change reads as follows:

*“The health and safety of every student at the State University of New
York and its State-operated and community college is of utmost importance.
A student acting in good faith that discloses any incident of domestic
violence, dating violence, stalking, and/or sexual assault to SUNY
Plattsburgh officials or law enforcement will not be subject to SUNY
Plattsburgh Code of Conduct action for violations of Social Distancing &
Face Covering Policy occurring at or near the time of the commission of the
domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and/or sexual assault.”*

As a reminder, we also have the Policy for Alcohol and/or Drug Use Amnesty
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/faq.html> in
cases of sexual and/or interpersonal violence. Please access r
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/sexual-assault-interpersonal-violence.html>esources
and reporting options

available
throughout our community.

Violence Policy

.

It is the policy of SUNY Plattsburgh that interpersonal violence will not
be tolerated. Further, it is the policy of the College to hold
perpetrators accountable for their actions, through campus judicial or
personnel procedures if appropriate, and by working with community agencies
and law enforcement as appropriate.

SUNY Plattsburgh complies with enforcement of all known valid court orders
of protection that are brought to the attention of SUNY Plattsburgh. SUNY
Plattsburgh shall comply with Federal and State Law when information is
requested by domestic violence victims or law enforcement regarding an
alleged violation of an order of protection. Please notify University
Police and/or the Office of Human Resource Services of any orders of
protection to which you may need support with.
