Office of the Provost/VPAA provost-office at plattsburgh.edu
Tue Nov 22 14:44:46 UTC 2022

Good morning, colleagues.

President Enyedi has signed off on the deactivation of the Philosophy major
and notified the Senate. The deactivation of the Philosophy major at SUNY
Plattsburgh will discontinue the recruitment and enrollment of new students
to the major. Academic Affairs will ensure that all currently registered
(as of Fall 2022), declared majors are well advised to successfully
complete the major in a timely manner.

The following details additional information of how we will proceed moving
forward. My office is here to help with any additional questions that may
arise:

Philosophy Minor for Students

Academic Affairs and the School of Arts and Sciences will continue to offer
a selection of Philosophy courses to allow interested students the
opportunity to pursue a Philosophy minor and/or courses of interest to
them. In addition, the Philosophy minor will not require more than 18
credits to complete (the current requirement is 21).

Philosophy Courses for General Education

Philosophy courses will continue to be offered as part of the Cardinal
Core. Academic Departments/Programs outside of Philosophy that wish to
include Philosophy courses as electives/cognates should collaborate with
Philosophy faculty to determine which courses can be offered within a
regular cycle of offerings to serve students in their respective
departments.
