[Academic-Affairs] Holiday wishes to Academic Affairs

Dear Colleagues,

I know that grades were due yesterday, and if you are more efficient at
this monumental task than I ever was, you are finally free to breathe a
deep sigh at the completion of another semester.  As an English professor,
I was often still at the kitchen table, grading final essays when the
dean's office called to remind me that I had missed the deadline!

I have had many conversations with faculty across this time of returning
from COVID, and I know that many of you are struggling mightily with what
seems like a new type of student and student challenges that you have never
seen before.  You struggle because you care so much about our students as
committed teachers and support professionals.  If you didn't care, you
wouldn't be struggling.  For this, I am actually grateful.

Please know that I am working to see what approaches, if any, I and my
office can provide to help you all, and our students, through this
challenging period.

Yesterday, on NPR's morning program, I heard a speaker state that 65% of
today's "youth" express high levels of stress, depression, and anxiety.  No
doubt this data is visible to you as you work with our current students.

Some of you know that I and my family have welcomed a new family member
this fall--Lily (below), who will be 6 months on Xmas.  She brings me much
joy as we watch her experience new things in life--like snow!  I hope you
have similar joyous distractions to lift your spirits during your holiday
break.
