[Academic-Affairs] Thinking about this week . . .

Colleagues,

By now, I hope you have read the communication sent out from the Office of
the President on Saturday regarding a traffic stop involving three white
officers and two Black female students. There is also an additional
message from UP Chief Pat Rascoe that was sent out last night. Please make
sure you have read both messages. I met with my team yesterday to discuss
how we, in academic affairs, can be part of a campus response that is
committed to doing "better," in the words of the President's message: "to
do better and be better as a diverse campus that tolerates nothing less
than equity and inclusion for all who work and study here."

I encourage you as we move through this week to do what you can to support
and help any among our campus community--faculty, staff, students--who are
struggling with what they have heard. In terms of classroom work, we know
that experiences of trauma negatively impact the ability to learn. For
faculty, there may be feelings that make teaching difficult. As you meet
with our students, please consider asking if there are any students in your
classes who wish to share what they are thinking and feeling in relation to
what they have heard about this incident.

Sincerely,

Anne
