It has often been said that Canada and the United States have long enjoyed a "special relationship", but in reality, they represent two sovereign countries with political interests and agendas that do not necessarily align. When conflicts emerge, and they invariably will, it is critical for prime ministers and presidents to draw on their personal interactions in order to better navigate one of the world's most important relationships. While some leaders have been able to do this brilliantly, others have succumbed to domestic and international pressures that have compromised the strength and durability of the bilateral relationship. </span><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"> </span></p><p class="x-scope"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Presenter's Short Bio: </span></p><p class="x-scope"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#202124">Dr. Donald Abelson</span><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"> is the Director of the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government, Steven K. Hudson Chair in Canada-US Relations, and is Professor of Political Science, St. Francis Xavier University. Dr. Abelson is the author of several books and is currently writing a textbook with Stephen Brooks and Melissa Hausmann.
