As we observe Black History Month, it
is worth reminding ourselves of the reality of Black History. While
Black History has been shaped by powerful forces such as slavery, the
Civil War, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and Black Lives Matter
it should not, and cannot, be reduced to a simple story of oppression
and the struggle for justice.

To help us learn more about the
complexity of the Black experience in America, we welcome Pastor David
M. Fryson, Esq., Interim VP of DEI to the Institute. He will share
stories from his family history and life that illuminate the complexity
and nuance embedded within the broad span of Black History, such as the
story of Sam Cabell and Mary Barnes.

Pastor David M. Fryson,

at SUNY Plattsburgh. Pastor Fryson has an extensive background in higher
education leadership serving as the founding Vice President of DEI at
West Virginia University and in interim VP roles at Brandeis University
and recently at Quinnipiac University before coming to Plattsburgh. He
also has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, has extensive
experience with community engagement as a diversity professional, and
serves as the Senior Pastor of the New First Baptist Church of Kanawha
