<span><div>The Institute for Ethics in Public Life, the Redcay Honors Center, and Feinberg Library present:</div><div> </div><div>"Book Bans in School and Public Libraries"</div><div>Monday, Oct. 2, at 5:30pm in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center<br></div><div> </div><div>In
recent years there has been a significant increase in efforts to ban
books from school libraries and public libraries across the United
States. The bans, and attempted bans, are based on the argument that the
books contain ideas harmful to young people and/or society at large.
The books at issue tend to deal with issues of race, gender, or
sexuality, and are criticized as examples of "woke" culture or because
they are blamed for young people expressing their sexuality in ways that
some find unacceptable. </div><div></div><div><br></div><div>The
members of this panel will critically examine this wave of book bans and
consider the impact of banning these books on both the young people who
use these libraries and on the libraries themselves. </div><div><br></div><div>The panel consists of:</div><div><br></div><div><b>Dr. Joshua Beatty</b>, Interim Director of Feinberg Library.
He has been a librarian at SUNY Plattsburgh since 2010 and holds an MLIS
from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D in American history from
the College of William and Mary.
</div><div><b>Mr. Ben Carman<i>,</i></b>
Youth Services Librarian at Plattsburgh Public Library since 2016;
worked as a secondary educator and in public and academic libraries.
Graduate of SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Binghamton, and Rutgers University.
Passionate about representation in literature, accessibility, and equity
in library and information services. <br></div><div><b>Dr. Preeti Samudra</b>,
Assistant Professor of Psychology. Teaches developmental psychology,
particularly childhood and adolescence, with a research focus on
language and literacy development and children's learning.<br></div><div><b>Dr. Yong Yu</b>,
Associate Professor of Education. Before joining the faculty at SUNY
Plattsburgh, Dr. Yu was an English teacher and teacher educator for 15
years in China. She currently teaches literacy in the teacher education
program. Her research interests include multicultural children’s
literature, language and literacy education, and clinical experiences in
teacher preparation.</div><div><br></div><div>The moderator for this event is Dr. Daniel Lake, Director of the Institute for Ethics in Public Life.</div><div><br></div><div>Please join us for this important discussion to kick off Banned Books Week on campus.
