roundtable discussion of the future of Social Security will be held at
3pm on Thursday, Dec. 8, in the Hermes Conference Room (room 114), Au
Sable Hall. The panel features Prof. Colin Read (Department of
Economics), Ms. Barbara McBurnie (Board of Directors, Senior Action
Council), Prof. Daniel Lake (Department of Political Science), and will
be moderated by Mr. Chris Bottini (New York Public Interest Research
Group - NYPIRG).</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:times new roman,serif"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:times new roman,serif">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><font size="2">First established in 1935, Social Security is the largest
federal social insurance program. Commonly known for providing retirement
benefits for Americans over 65, it’s also the most effective anti-poverty
measure.<span> </span>Without it, <a href="https://www.cbpp.org/research/social-security/social-security-lifts-more-people-above-the-poverty-line-than-any-other" target="_blank">22.5 million</a> more
Americans would be living in poverty. <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/chartbooks/fast_facts/2022/fast_facts22.html#pagei" target="_blank">Six million</a> of them are under 65,
including nearly one million children.<span>
</span>For about a quarter of households, Social Security <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v77n2/v77n2p1.html" target="_blank">makes up 90%</a> or more
of their income.<span> </span><span></span></font></p><font size="2">
</font><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><font size="2"><span> </span></font></p><font size="2">
</font><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><font size="2">As effective as Social Security is, it also is in danger of
running out of funds to pay beneficiaries.<span>
</span>By 2035 the program will only be able to pay out 78% of current benefits
unless Congressional action is taken. Additionally, young people are
pessimistic about the future of the program. According to <a href="https://nationwidefinancial.com/media/pdf/NFM-20936AO.pdf" target="_blank">one poll</a>, 47% of
millennials at least somewhat agreed with the statement, “I will not get a dime
of the Social Security benefits I have earned.”<span></span></font></p><font size="2">
</font><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><font size="2"><span> </span></font></p><font size="2">
</font><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><font size="2">Working in consultation with AARP, NYPIRG has been organizing
campus events across the state focused on these issues during the Fall
semester.<span> </span>The panel will be offering a range of views on Social Security and public policy
options. Audience participation will be welcomed.</font></p></div>
