in terms of patient-family support and health outcomes. Birth and post-partum doulas
emerged in the United States in the 1960s in an effort to increase the agency of pregnant
women and reduce unnecessary medical interventions. Additionally, end-of-life and death
doulas are becoming increasingly common in palliative and hospice care. Studying the
larger doula movements in the United States from a relationship-centered communication
perspective offers a lens into the everyday lived experiences of those facing life and death
