--></style></head><body lang="EN-US" link="#0563C1" vlink="#954F72"><div class="WordSection1"><p class="MsoNormal">Greetings:</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">On behalf of Dr. Christopher Kirkey, the Institute for Quebec Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh invites you to a virtual presentation featuring <span style="letter-spacing:.15pt;background:white">Dr. Mary Anne Poutanen</span><span style="color:#202124">, a historian who teaches at McGill University and Concordia University. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Presentation Title:</p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-CA" style="color:black">“Little Fists for Social Justice: Anti-Semitism, Community, and Montreal’s Aberdeen School Strike, 1913”</span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b> </b></p><p class="MsoNormal">Presentation Date and Time:</p><p class="MsoNormal"><b>Tuesday, March 22, 2022</b></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b>5:00 PM</b></p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Overview:</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">In February 1913, Jewish students at Montreal’s Aberdeen School went on strike in response to a teacher’s anti-Semitic comments.<span style="font-size:14.0pt"> </span>Using strategies they had learned at home, students<span style="font-size:14.0pt"> </span>picketed the school and marched in the streets to seek support from community leaders at the Yiddish-language newspaper, <i>Der</i> <i>Keneder Adler</i>, and at the Baron de Hirsch Institute. The strike had long-lasting consequences for the Jewish community, for Protestant school board policy, and for the character of Queìbec’s education system. </p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Presenter's Short Bio:</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span style="letter-spacing:.15pt;background:white">Dr. Poutanen is an historian who teaches interdisciplinary studies at McGill University and history at Concordia University. She is a member of the Montreal History Group and of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal at McGill.
