--></style></head><body lang="EN-US" link="#0563C1" vlink="#954F72" style="word-wrap:break-word"><div class="WordSection1"><p class="MsoNormal">Dear Members of the Campus Community,</p><p class="MsoNormal">We were saddened today to have learned of the death of Professor Emeritus of Computer Science Julius Archibald Jr. of Plattsburgh, who died Monday, Aug. 28, 2023. He was 92.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Professor Archibald, who was originally from New York City, joined the faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh as an associate professor in 1970 after spending 17 years as a computational scientist in government and industry. His first assignment was with the U.S. Air Force, where he wrote programs — in machine language — and analyzed results relative to the simulation of nose-gear vibration.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The majority of his non-academic career was spent with General Electric in Schenectady where he was involved in the programming, analysis and development of computational systems for the simulation of nuclear power reactors through diffusion theory. During this period, he revamped the method for solving these problems, with a significant amount of this work being done in assembly language.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Once at SUNY Plattsburgh, he was promoted to full professor and became chair of computer science in 1974, a role he performed for 22 years. In addition to his service in computer science, he served as acting chair of the math department from 1988 to 1990, as associate dean in arts and science from 1994 to 1996 at which time he retired but remained active with the college, participating in numerous roles and events, particularly when it came to meeting with alumni.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Calling hours will be held Friday, Sept. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court St., Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 127 Beekman St., Plattsburgh.
